Netball mentor proud of comeback in tight loss

A strong start for Heathcote & District was enough for the visitors to hold on to a 43 to 37 win over the GDFL in netball interleague action.

The Raiders fought back to level the scores in the final term after trailing 17 to 24 at the main break.

But Heathcote found another gear to close out the game.

GDFL coach Nicole Weatherely praised the performance of her players, including a standout, Werribee Centrals goal-keeper Amanda O’Malley (née Wilson) who was judged the Raiders’ best on court in a losing side.

“Amanda was elevated to the team in the weeks leading up to the interleague game due to some departures in our league,” Weatherely explained.

“At the end of the first quarter I asked Amanda to come on and manipulate the space around the post and position herself for each rebound.”

“Many of the game’s standout moments and intercepts were a result of Amanda’s work rate.”

The final result brought Geelong District’s long winning streak, featuring convincing wins over North Central and Central Highlands, to an end.

“All the girls gave their all and they should be proud of their performances,” Weatherley added.

“It was an honour to coach the side and I really want to thank Madge Anderton for the opportunity and Meagan Sproule for her work on the day.”

Weatherley will now coach against Bannockburn’s interleague stars Leigh Masek and Celeste De Munari in this Saturday’s second vs. sixth clash.
