Panthers wait on former Eagle Rabbas, Holzfeind to return

Bell Post Hill midfielder Tane Rabbas may be a chance to face his former East Geelong side this weekend for the first time since crossing over from the Richmond Crescent in 2016.

The 21-year-old collected 13 disposals against Belmont in Round 1 before hobbling off the ground at the start of the third term with a groin injury.

However the newest member of the Panther’s 47-member senior premiership club will not be rushed according to his coach Brad Martin.

“Tane still has a few boxes to tick before we make a decision but we are happy to confirm David Holzfeind will make a return to the reserves,” Martin said this evening.

This will mark the first game for the 32-year-old Holzfeind who last featured in the Panthers’ 2016 senior grand final before suffering a knee injury while wakeboarding December that year.

Rabbas meanwhile watched on over the weekend as Bell Post Hill faced its first defeat to Thomson since 2012 by 10-points (the Tigers led the scoring shots 27 to 17).

The Panthers would also be without injured premiership players Justin Tarr, Rhys Burke, Matt Lentini, Jayden Ettridge and Nick Martinu (as well as suspended defender Beau McNamara).

And the casualty list grew when Daniel Walve (head clash) was hospitalised in the opening term minutes before Bungaree recruit Joel Mirtschin (pictured) suffered also limped off with a groin injury.

“We still should have won, we’re not making any excuses,” Martin added.

“These guys have been unlucky early in the season but that’s just but just football.”

Bell Post Hill will still return home as overwhelming favourites when hosting 2012 senior grand final rival East Geelong, a match up which saw Rabbas (quad) sidelined in Round 10, last year.

Rabbas polled an astonishing nine Whitley medal votes for the Eagles in 2016 before returning to Bell Post Hill where he would again lead his club’s league votes with 13.
