It has been 25 years since an Anakie player has taken out the Whitley medal.

There's every chance that drought may be coming to an end after it was revealed that Joshua Mawson has captured an early lead in this year's Athletes Foot MVP.

The second-year recruit helped guide the Roos to a 15.15 (105) to 12.9 (81) win against Corio with 40 disposals and three goals in the process.

ATHLETES FOOT LEADERBOARD

11 - Joshua Mawson (Anakie)
10 - Cassidy Parish (Winchelsea)
9 - Brad Gerrard (Anakie)
9 - Henry Hawker (Bannockburn)
9 - Josh Viney (Inverleigh)
7 - Jordan Camm (Thomson)

Unlike the Whitley medal, where the best three players on the field are voted on by the umpires, the MVP award sees three players from each side poll votes from the opposing senior coach or team manager.

In 2024, Corio's Matthew James shared the award with Geelong West's Josh Viney (30 votes each). James would go on to win his second Whitley medal that season.

Last year the Athletes Foot Award was won by Corio's Russell Cowan with 27 votes however he would only poll six votes at Buckleys the following week.
